This is what many confirm to be a 2022 Ford Maverick compact pickup truck prototype. It is very well disguised as a crossover or an SUV, but several sources confirm that this is indeed a small pickup that is supposed to be based on the new Bronco Sport and slot into the lineup just below the Ford Ranger.

Big thanks to James Kelly (TFLtruck viewer) for sending these prototype images to us.

This small truck is rumored to be based on the same chassis as the current 2020 Ford Escape and 2021 Bronco Sport. This prototype is riding on a wheelbase that is significantly longer than that of the Escape or the Bronco Sport. It likely has a crew cab configuration (with four doors) and a bed that is around five-feet long. We do not have any official specs on this vehicle yet.

How can we be sure that such a pickup is coming and that it will be called a Maverick? We have images of a Maverick tailgate that has the name stamped in it. There is an ongoing trend that pickup trucks are getting larger in size and more expensive in price. This opens up a spot in the marketplace for a compact truck like the Maverick.

The most direct competitor to a small pickup like this is the upcoming Hyundai Santa Cruz.

Under the hood could be a selection of power options: a 1.5-liter I3 turbocharged engine, a 2.0-liter I4 turbo engine, or hybrid, or a plug-in powertrain that is also available in the Ford Espace.

Our best educated guess is that the Maverick pickup truck would have a payload rating of just over 1,000 lbs and a towing capacity of at least 3,500 lbs. Since, the 2020 Ford Ranger starts at $24,410. If or when the Maverick hits the dealerships, it will likely have a starting price of under $24,000.
