Watch engine or engines will the next generation 2021 Nissan Frontier use? We recently received an anonymous report from a claimed insider that Nissan is testing an updated version of its VQ35 – 3.5-liter gas V6 engine.

This is an unofficial report not confirmed by Nissan.

Which 3.5-liter could this be? It may be an engine that it very similar to the one currently used in the Nissan Pathfinder. The Pathfinder V6 is a direct injected engine that is currently rated at 285 hp @ 6,400 rpm and 259 lb-ft of torque @ 4,800 rpm.

The next Frontier may offer more than one engine choice. The naturally aspirated V6 mentioned here may be the one that give the Frontier its maximum towing capacity to compete against the new Ford Ranger and the Jeep Gladiator. These new midsize trucks are rated at a maximum 7,500 lbs and 7,650 lbs of towing respectively.

The next Frontier may also get a turbocharged I4 gas engine and/or some version of a gas/electric hybrid system for increased efficiency.

While we are thinking about the future, here is a quick glance into the past. Here is a close and in-depth review of a 2006 Nissan Frontier 4×4 that uses the older design 4.0-liter V6 engine. This 2006 Frontier belongs to George, the truck’s original owner. It has about 175,000 miles on the clock.
