2021 Chevy Tahoe & Silverado: Your Questions Answered (Q & A)

What about weight savings and lockers?

2021 Chevy Suburban

Since the new 2021 Chevy Suburban and Tahoe made their official debut this week, we received dozens of questions. We will address all questions in this post, but keep in mind that we still do not know some specifications.

Chevy Tahoe & Suburban

Right off the bat, Chevrolet did not release the following information:

  • Curb weights for the Tahoe & Suburban
  • EPA fuel efficiency estimates
  • Maximum towing or maximum payload ratings
  • Pricing

(We will update this post as we get more information and specs.)

How much with the new Tahoe and Suburban be rated to tow and haul?

These ratings are not available yet, but the max. towing number should be near or greater than the new 2020 Ford Expedition towing capacity of 9,300 lbs for a 2WD model or 9,000 lbs for a 4×4.

Are the new Tahoe and Suburban made out of aluminum to save weight?

Chevrolet did not specify or talk about any weight savings for the new 2021 Tahoe or Suburban. They talked at length about the increased size and interior volumes of the new SUVs. There are some reports that suggest the next-generation SUVs gained some weight, but we hope the curb weights remain on par with the outgoing generation.

The current 2020 Tahoe base curb weight starts at 5,355 lbs. The base 2020 Suburban currently starts at 5,586 lbs.

What Is the Z71 All About?

The off-road focused Z71 version of the 2021 Tahoe and Suburban is now its own trim level, not just an optional package as before. The Z71 gets a suspension lift (also offered with an adjustable air suspension), unique wheels & tires, a different front fascia for improved approach angle, and more.

We do not yet have total ground clearance and approach / breakover / departure angle specifications.

Will the 2021 Tahoe and Suburban 4×4 Offer a Low-Range Transfer Case?

Yes, a low-range transfer case will continue to be offered. We do not yet have information about a locking center, rear, or front differentials.

Why Isn’t the 3.0-liter Diesel Offered with the Tahoe Z71?

We do not have an official answer on this, but we guess that the upcoming 2021 GMC Yukon AT4 may offer the diesel engine. We will learn more about this in mid-January 2020 when the 2021 Yukon and Yukon XL make their world debut.

Is Chevrolet Planning to Offer Other Engine Options or a Gas/Electric Hybrid Tahoe?

We do not have any information on this yet.

The 2021 Tahoe and Suburban will go on sale in mid-2020, according to Chevrolet.

Please let us know your other questions, and we will do our best to get the answers from Chevrolet and GM.
