Seat belt pretensioners and fire

There is a chance that, if the truck is equipped with carpet, there is a possibility of fire. Hot gasses may flow from the front seat belt pretensioners. There is an opening in the pretensioner bracket and if the heat from the opening is extreme, there is a chance of fire.

There are around 556,400 GM trucks affected. All of these vehicles are equipped with carpet floor covering. Vinyl floor-covered vehicles are not on the recall list. The recall covers:

  • 2019 – 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500s
  • 2020 GMC Sierra HD and Chevrolet Silverado HD2500 and 3500 heavy duty trucks.

So far, there have been no announcements regarding other General Motors’ vehicles. We will keep an eye on these recalls and TFLtruck will update this post, or other posts if additional information becomes available.

What you can do

To mitigate this issue, the opening in the pretensioner bracket must be closed. Dealerships should be able to perform this fix for free. If you have questions or concerns, call Chevrolet at 800-630-2438 or GMC at 800-462-8782.

You can also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236. More information is available on the NHTSA website you can access (here).
