2020 Chevy Silverado HD 6.6L Gas V8 Small Block Deep Dive (Video)

What is the all-new heavy duty truck 6.6L gas V8 all about? This engine makes its debut in the upcoming new 2020 Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD trucks. This engine replaces the 6.0L Vortec V8 in the big trucks.

6.6L Gas V8

The engine feature iron block and Chevy’s venerable small block proportions. The displacement is bumped up to 6.6-liters, and compression is increased to 10.8-to-1. This engine uses direct injection to produce 401 horsepower @ 5,200 rpm and 464 lb-ft of torque @ 4,000 rpm on regular octane. The engine will be mated to an updated version of GM’s 6L90 6-speed automatic transmission.

How will this engine perform? Will it deliver enough punch and low-end grunt to move heavy loads and offer good acceleration? We will have to wait several months before we can drive it.

Why hasn’t GM put the 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 into their heavy duty trucks? This engine currently delivers 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque, and it is available in GM’s 1500 half-ton trucks and full-size SUVs. We do not a direct answer for this, but the 6.6L gas V8 will be the sole gasoline engine in GM’s heavy duty trucks (at least for now).

The 2020 Chevy Silverado HD are going on sale in “later summer 2019” according to Chevrolet.
