Ask TFL: What’s a Good Used 4×4 Truck? Can I Put a Snow Plow on a Toyota Tacoma?

What’s a good used truck for snowy conditions that is not very big?

We recently received this question from Tommy who is moving back to the snowy Rocky Mountains.

I am 81 and moving back to Colorado in the high country. I am looking for an older vehicle 2005 to 2008 for the snow. I am not sure if I need a 4×4 or AWD. I have a Toyota Tacoma 2WD with 222,000+ miles that runs great. I have a very short driveway there and the home is on the school bus route so the road is always plowed first. Also thinking about putting a plow on whatever vehicle I get.

Tommy, welcome back to Colorado! It sounds like you want a smaller truck or SUV (preferably midsize) in order to park it in a small driveway. A midsize truck should work well. I would recommend a 4×4 for sure. If you want to put a snow plow on the vehicle, a frame-based truck or SUV is practically a must. There are snow plow systems that can mount via a front hitch receiver, or to the frame.

It’s less of a question between 4×4 or AWD systems, and more of a choice for great snow/winter tires (and perhaps chains as well). If you are used to having a Tacoma, a Tacoma 4×4 would work great. Although, Toyota 4×4 trucks are very expensive to buy in Colorado because they are desirable.
