Ram vs GMC vs Nissan : ramp travel index test

Which new half-ton off-road truck has the best suspension articulation? This is the first round of 2019 Gold Winch ramp travel index (RTI) testing. This time it’s the new 2019 Ram Rebel, 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4, and a new Nissan Titan PRO-4X going up the 20-degree ramp to see which can flex the most.

Why is suspension flex important? The more articulation means the tires have more contact with the ground on rough terrain. More contact means better traction off-road.

The Ramp Travel Index (RTI) test allows us to measure the articulation using the following formula: (distance traveled up the ramp) / truck’s wheelbase * 1000

2019 GMC Sierra AT4

The 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4 went 60.25 inches up the ramp. The Sierra crew cab has a wheelbase of 147.5 inches. The RTI score is: 408.5

2019 Ram Rebel

The 2019 Ram 1500 Rebel went 58.75 inches up the ramp. The Rebel quad cab has a wheelbase of 140.5 inches.  The RTI score is: 418.1

2018 Nissan Titan

The 2018 Nissan Titan PRO-4X went 58.5 inches up the ramp. The Titan crew cab has a wheelbase of 139.8 inches. The RTI score is: 418.5

In this round, the Titan PRO-4X crew cab just edged out the 2019 Ram Rebel quad cab.
