A recent report from GM Authority states that General Motors is developing and is planning to use a new gasoline V8 engine in the upcoming 2020 Chevy Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD trucks. The next generation of the heavy duty trucks are expected to go on sale in the latter part of 2019.

The report says that the new 6.6L gas V8 engine codename is LXX, and it is expected to produce 400 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque. This is a significant jump of the 6.0L Vortec V8 that has been GM’s workhorse engine for many years/decades (is currently rated at: 360 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque).

TFLtruck is unable to find other evidence to support the report at this time.

Who says engine downsizing is a trend? When it comes to heavy duty trucks, there is still no replacement for displacement. Ford is also rumored to up the displacement and power on their upcoming HD gas engine to a 7.3L V8. All that is left is for Ram to boost either displacement and/or power from their big HEMI V8s.

The report also says to expect a new heavy duty transmission for the LXX gasoline V8 and the mostly carryover 6.6L Duramax turbo-diesel V8 (L5P). There is no credible information as to what new transmission GM is planning. It could be any number of units, but my guess is that GM will stay with Allison for their transmission needs.
