Ask TFL: Chevy Colorado ZR2 or Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro: Which Is Better Over the Same Obstacle?

Chevy Colorado ZR2 or Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro

Can the Chevy Colorado ZR2 go over an obstacle that the Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro cannot, or vise versa? We recently received this question from Shawn.

Please Test the Colorado zr2 against a Tacoma trd pro and see if there is an obstacle one can’t do but the other can?

It’s very difficult to set up an off-road test where two trucks compete and only one truck finishes. That implies that one of the trucks is somehow damaged or cannot physically keep going because it’s stuck.

Yea, we could drive two trucks through a mud hole and see how they do, but our solution to this question is the Rocky Mountain Cliffhanger 2.0 off-road trail. This is a very steep trail with many large loose rocks, and a large rock obstacle we call the Razor Bend.

Check Colorado ZR2

The Colorado ZR2 is off-road ready with a special suspension with a wider track and DSSV spool-valve shocks. It has a front and a rear locking differentials, skid plates, side rock sliders, and Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac tires.

Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro

The Tacoma TRD Pro is a capable truck in its own right. It has all of the goodies the ZR2 has, with the exception of the front locker and the Duratrac tires. The Tacoma TRD Pro actually has a better approach angle and a clever crawl control system.

Perhaps the important element that lets the TRD Pro down are the tires. The Wranglers with Kevlar are tough, but they do not have quiet as much bite as the Duratracs.

Please watch both videos and see how these two trucks handle the Cliffhanger 2.0 challenge.
