Can We Catch the Big One? First Drive of the Nissan Titan XD Surfcamp & Deep Sea Fishing

Nissan Titan XD Surfcamp

Nissan introduces the Titan XD Surfcamp concept truck that demonstrates a variety of ways you can modify and upgrade a Titan truck for your next camping and fishing adventure. The basis for this truck is a 2018 Nissan Titan XD midnight edition with a 5.0L Cummins V8 turbo-diesel under the hood.

The 310 hp / 555 lb-ft engine and the 6-speed AISIN automatic transmission remain untouched. The truck sits on an ICON suspension system that is Nissan approved. It provides a 3-inch lift with remote reservoir off-road shocks. This suspension can be ordered via your Nissan dealer. It can be installed at the dealer, and it will not void your truck’s 5-year/100,000 mile warranty.

The truck is rolling on 17-inch ICON rims and Nitto Ridge Grappler tires. There are aftermarket front and rear steel bumpers, a roof rack that houses the spare tire and KC off-road lights. In the back, there is a heavy duty utility rack with a rating of approximately 750 lbs. There is a power-folding rack-mounted tent on top that can accomodate two people comfortably. Inside the bed is a drawer system with a floor that can handle about 1,000 lbs on top of it.

All of the extra equipment adds a lot of weight to the vehicle. During a brief first drive of the Surfcamp Titan XD, I could tell the extra equipment added weight to the truck.  The rear-end felt more planted with the extra weight. The Cummins V8 still offers plenty oomph to accelerate this truck and move it down the road. The ICON suspension offers a ride that is very similar to the stock system, which is good.

I did not get a chance to take the truck off-road, but the Nitto Ridge Grapplers look plenty aggressive for off-road use on rocks, dirt, and mud. As soon as we get an opportunity to take these tires off-road – we will surely publish a review.
