Ford F150 with a Supercharged & Turbo Engine and a Claimed 37 MPG?!? (Video)

Achates Power, the manufacturer of this horizontally opposed, six-cylinder, turbocharged AND supercharged engine hopes to sell this efficient power-plant to an OEM. This isn’t your run-of-the-mill H6 and it has nothing to do with the Subaru boxer H6. It is a super-high compression engine that uses no spark plugs or glow plugs in either its as or diesel form. While it cannot simply switch from its gas architecture to diesel, the same rudimentary components work with either fuel.

This two-stroke engine can trace its roots to WW2 German aircraft that used an “OP” engine. While it’s displacement is 2.7-liters, its external architecture makes it look massive. It makes 270 horsepower and 480 lbs-feet of torque. According to AChates Power, it has 50% more efficiency than today’s equivalent engines. According to Achates Power, it will get a combined 37 mpp while the diesel gets 42 mpg. Mind you, that’s real world fuel mileage.

The supercharge backs up the turbocharger as to eliminated torque lag and increase mpg.

While we’re on the topic, keep in mind that this engine has not yet completed its epa evaluations and they did not give out prices for this new engine either. While we’re waiting, it will be interesting to see which automaker (if any) buys this tech!

In the meantime, enjoy this video!
