Ask TFLtruck: Ram 1500 Rebel or Chevy Colorado ZR2 – Which Truck to Buy?

Chevy Colorado ZR2 vs Ford Raptor vs Ram Power Wagon

The 2018 Ram 1500 Rebel and the 2018 Chevy Colorado ZR2 could be configured at a similar price (between $44,000 – $47,000). Caleb W. sends us an interesting question. Which truck would you recommend to purchase? Which truck has a better ride on pavement?

I am in the market for a truck, and I have been watching a lot of your videos on the Colorado ZR2 and your Ram Rebel videos. I know the Ram is a bigger truck, but the price isn’t that far off from the ZR2. Since the truck will mainly be a commuter truck and only used for off road trails every once in awhile which would be better and which is a more comfortable daily driver? As far as off road do you have a preference in the two?
Thanks, Caleb W.

2018 Ram 1500 Rebel

The Rebel is definitely a bigger truck, so if you expect to transport lots of your friends and family around – the full-size Rebel would be a better choice. You can also get a Rebel with a HEMI V8. Who doesn’t love a V8 off-road truck? The 2018 Rebel does come with air suspension all the way around, and it is a nice riding truck, but … (see below).

2018 Chevy Colorado ZR2

I still prefer the ride characteristics of the Colorado ZR2. The fancy DSSV shocks make for smooth on-road ride that is also direct and controllable. It reminds me of a performance minded SUV, which also has a high riding position. As cool as the Rebel is, I would pick the ZR2. It’s a bit more maneuverable off-road than the 2018 Rebel, and you could also get the ZR2 with a 2.8L Duramax turbo-diesel for better highway efficiency.

I may change my tune once I drive the new 2019 Rebel quad cab with steel coil suspension and HEMI V8 with eTorque, but it will have to wait for a couple more months.

What do you guys think? Which truck would you choose: a Rebel or a ZR2?
