What if you need or want to go off-road in a two-wheel-drive heavy duty work truck? What if the truck was the 2017 Ford F-250 XL regular cab 2WD on street-biased tires? You would think it would be no good, but this truck has a secret weapon. This Super Duty has a locking rear differential, which should help in low traction situations. Will this truck make it up TFLtruck’s Gold Mine Hill? We had to find out.
This F-250 is equipped with Ford’s updated 6.2L gasoline V8 with a rating of 385 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque. Ford’s new lighter duty 6-speed automatic Torqshift-G transmission does the shifting.
Getting to test a 2WD heavy duty work truck with a gas V8 is a rare treat for us. We have already shown that the new V8 is very quick and also fuel efficient when compared to the competition. You can watch all of our test on our TFLtruck channel.
The truck struggled, but it made it up the two out of the three off-road stages in this test. It was not easy, but the rear locker definitely helped.
