Ask MrTruck Ep.15: Best Off-Road Truck for Under $50K? (Video)

On this episode of Ask Mr. Truck, Kent ‘Mr. Truck’ Sundling and Andre discuss which truck is the best off-roader for under $50K, in addition to a number of other viewer questions.

So, what is the best truck in this price range? Kent and Andre discussed three options. First is the 2017 Chevy Colorado ZR2, specifically the one with the baby Duramax diesel. This 2.8L Turbodiesel four-cylinder makes 181 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. However, the engine is just a part of the off-road goodness. For off-road ability, you can thank the ZR2’s comprehensive suspension makeover. That, plus locking front and rear diffs, large off-road tires, and under body protection make the ZR2 an off-road monster for under $50K new.

Another interesting option is the 2017 Ram Rebel. The Rebel comes with 33-inch off-road tires, a one inch lift and air suspension to help its off-road ride. While it is not on the same level as the Ram Power Wagon, it does provide good off-road ability for under $50K. Also, the Power Wagon starts at just $51,695. If you can make the stretch on your budget, this will be a significantly more worthy vehicle on the trails. Another option could be a brand new Ram 2500 HD Tradesman with the Power Wagon Equipment package or under $50K.

Last, but not least is the option of a used Ford Raptor. The Raptor, of course, is Ford’s most capable off-road truck. Lifted, and fitted with Fox shocks capable of desert running, the Raptor is an excellent choice for those in the market for an off-road truck. However, this truck is in extremely high demand. Furthermore, it is likely to have been driven extremely hard, due to its capabilities. Despite this, it is still an excellent off-roader that can be found for less than $50K on the used market.

What brand new or slightly used truck do you think is the most off-road capable for less than $50,000? Be sure to comment below and let us know what you think.
