Ask MrTruck: Can a Flash Tune Damage Your Diesel Truck, Rolling Coal Ban, Payload Limits, and More (Video)

roll coal race track drag diesel smoke

What do you think about adding after-market diesel truck tuners or programmers? What are the details about the recent rolling coal ban? What is the payload rating of my SUV? Should I buy a midsize truck for daily driving or a full-size pickup for a rare towing trip.

Kent “Mr. Truck” Sundling is back to answer these and many other pickup truck questions.

There are a wide variety of aftermarket diesel truck tuners, and most of them take advantage of the fuel delivery system and throw more diesel into the mix. Some also tinker with the turbocharger boost pressure to add more air as well. This can be a relatively cost effective way to add more power and/or make your truck more efficient. However, this also creates a lot more heat and puts additional strain on the transmission. Most heavy duty transmissions can handle the power boost, but there is another big problem. When or if a dealership finds any sign of an aftermarket tune inside your truck’s software, this almost always leads to a denial of warranty work on the power train and drive train components. There could be traces of after-market “tuner” software even if you returned your to the “stock” setting. Adding more fuel can also lead to black smoke coming out of your diesel truck. The truck is rolling coal, or ejecting unburned fuel/particulates.
