• The Nissan Titan XD Pro-4X Project Basecamp Overland: We See it in Action

    Nissan invited The Fast Lane Truck to see their first (official) crack at an overlanding truck – the Nissan Titan XD Pro-4X Project Basecamp. For years, off-road vehicles have been extensively modified for extended, rugged excursions. While it’s not a prerequisite for overlanding  (you can do it with a moped and a tent) having a beefy, diesel truck is a smart beginning.

    This adventure drive coincides with the 2017 Overland Expo, where Nissan’s overlander trucks will be on display May 12-14th in Flagstaff, Arizona.

    We spent a whole day driving in or with the Nissan Titan XD Pro-4X Project Basecamp driving into the Grand Canyon, stopping at the shore of the Colorado River. Along with the Nissan Titan XD Hellwig “Rule Breaker”, which debuted at the 2016 SEMA show, the Nissan Titan XD Pro-4X Project Basecamp points at a promising first step into overlanding for the brand.

    Extended range, respectable economy and great torque make diesel trucks appealing for overlanding. They are known to be rugged and reliable too. Still, the Big-3’s heavy-duty diesels are pricy and can be ponderous for some drivers. Having something that splits the differences between their heavy-duty trucks and light-duty, 1/2 ton trucks may be the Nissan Titan XD diesel’s best attribute.

    Nissan started with a Titan XD Pro-4X with the 310 horsepower, 555 lb-ft of torque, 5.0-liter diesel engine. Hooked up to a six-speed Aisin transmission, the Nissan Titan XD Pro-4X has an electric locking rear differential and tows 11,790 lbs. Being a heavier diesel, it’s rated at 1,744 lbs payload.

    It’s a respectable start, but there’s already a catch: the aforementioned Nissan Titan XD Hellwig Rule Breaker holds a 2,000 lbs Lance camper. That’s way over the standard payload maximum. Fortunately, both the Nissan Titan XD Hellwig Rule Breaker and the the Nissan Titan XD Pro-4X Project Basecamp have numerous suspension enhancements from Hellwig. As such, not only are extra loads workable, both vehicles performed on hard terrain as well as our unmodified (and unburdened) Titan Pro-4X 1/2 ton trucks.

    Seeing the Nissan Titan XD Pro-4X Project Basecamp function off-road while it pulls a trailer, in the rough, was like watching a military vehicle at work. I noticed very little sway on either vehicle off-road (mostly washboard and rocky riverbed) and they certainly looked at home when we made camp.

    The Patriot X2 adventure trailer weighs about 2,600 lbs and was an outstanding resource on the trail. We used its kitchen and cargo holds to feed over a dozen hungry adventurers. It rarely bounced (unlike other adventure trailers we’ve worked with) and it simply looks awesome.

    The accessory list for the Nissan Titan XD Pro-4X Project Basecamp is extensive, but you can purchase these components and pretty much build one of your own.

    1. When the manufacturer blatantly overloads their own vehicle in a marketing idea, it send the wrong message to potential buyers. I’m calling foul on this one. If the Titan XD Pro really wants to be a “5/8” tweener ton. They need to jump the payload to 2,000. My F-150 has more payload than this truck.

    2. My interest in overlanding has peaked in the last few years, and I’m probably one of many people just starting to look at this as a fun retirement activity. I subscribe to a great overlanding channel on YouTube with Andrew St Pierre White. I have never overlanded a day in my life, but I love the idea. I think this will be growing market in the next few years, and probably could be classified as a new lifestyle market in the U.S. Just look at how much #VanLife is growing.

      Currently there are very, very few options in America for a proper overlanding rig. (Mercedes Sprinter 4×4 diesel van may be the best platform we have to start.) Most people around the world start with a diesel LandCruiser or diesel pickup. Diesel is important for range, power and fuel economy. So, I see where Nissan was going with this concept. My only issue is that you are starting with a very large platform that was designed to tow and not carry. Most proper overlanders think towing a trailer is a bit ridiculous. They take a Land Cruiser dual cab truck and put an aftermarket enclosed cab on the back. So payload is more important than towing. They usually beef up the suspension for all of the payload weight, so maybe it is a moot point by complaining about the Titan XD needing suspension upgrades. However, if I needed to upgrade suspension I would prefer to start with a diesel in a 1/2 ton or midsize pickup first. The Toyota Hilux is another great overlanding rig used around the world. It too needs to be modified, but starting light and adding suspension seems to be a better alternative to the Titan XD starting “heavy duty” and adding suspension and more weight.

      Anyway, I’m very interested and I look forward to TFLTruck covering this burgeoning industry more.

      1. Caught on to that overlanding channel a few months back and yeah I’m hooked on the idea of overlanding. I’m still young though and with my current job I don’t have the time to do proper over landing anytime soon.
        This concept isn’t a bad idea though this truck should have a stock payload capable of handling the load. Kind of embarrassing to have what they call a tweener but not have a higher payload than a half ton.
        Big trucks aren’t ideal anyway though for over landing. Most US overland rigs are generally Tacomas, Jeeps, 4 runner, etc. Perhaps the new ZR2 will fit into the market with dual lockers and a small efficient diesel. Only issue with that one is limited payload.

    3. Unless you have the heavy load package with the 7 lug wheels. An f150 will not carry as much or with as much confidence. The xd is no 3/4 ton but much better at packing weight than an f150.

      1. Sorry Cmac. But that’s just not true. Both trucks have semi floating axle’s. People always talk about beefing up the suspension, but people forget the Axle still has a weight rating. So as it’s configured from the factory. The F-150 wins hands down.

I have nothing good to say other than the yellow one looked good. other than that they are all the same, sitting at 400HP give or take a few, diesels don’t sell, they all have a payload and towing I can work with and mpg differences are so slight I could care less. Its rather boring. Where are risk takers and big ideas gone. Other than the Raptor/Leafblower that failed on its engine along with the ZR2 and Tacoma Pro there is not much going on. Come on Bollinger where is that truck you promised. Where is the 4 wheel steering and ride control available in cars now. Where are the V8 turbos available in cars and SUV’s???

        You never have anything good to say, and what you do say should never be taken seriously because you have no experience driving most of these trucks!

        You say the Raptor V6tt is a failure, but the only true fail is your words and experience because you’ve never actually driven a 2017 Raptor! WTF?

        Everyone that has actually driven the new Raptor vs the old Raptor has nothing but positive to say after driving it. They start out like you about the sound thing, but all that changes after experiencing the power and how good the entire powertrain and experience is!!!

        You should try one – it would possibly give your opinions some value?

        In real world accuracy the Raptor is NOT a failure. It is and will continue to be a complete success!

        This truck is actually a nice spin in what to do with these Nissan trucks! They also come with a 400hp V8 like your always crying for.

    5. I think the new 1/2 ton Titans will eventually catch on and sales will increase. Not so sure of the XD though, especially with the diesel. I think the new 5.6 would be the engine to get. My buddy’s 2006 Titan has really held up well over the years.

    6. I’m still waiting for Nissan to fix that butt ugly front end, saw a 2016 XD Diesel on sale for $45,995.00…..in US dollars that’s like….. $31,000.00, not bad.

    7. Love the idea and I agree with you. The XD diesel is ideal for an over land truck. I would like ylTFL to test these trucks for a few days on their obstacles and towing regime.

    8. I previously owned a 2012 Titan Pro4x with the rear electronic locking differential. I now own a 2016 Ram Powerwagon. The Ram is a better truck due to the fact that it’s an HD but the rear elocker in the Titan made it nearly as capable. A good rear elocker in an overland type vehicle imo is a necessity.

    9. Nissan Titan XD has problems with drive train. The problem is caused by a “resonance frequency” that occurs at speeds above 75 mph. Vibrations caused by a condition that occurs in the power train systems at speeds above 75 mph and continued operation causes the transmission and driveshaft components to fracture. The problem is unnoticeable until it causes damages and the truck quits moving while driving. Also, truck can roll away if parked without the parking brake engaged.
