Why Are so Many People Buying Midsize Trucks? (Ask TFL)

Colorado

Midsize Trucks/Light Duty are red hot as you can see by THIS recent TFL sales story. Chevy, Nissan, Honda and Toyota can’t seems to build enough Colorados, Frontiers, Ridgelines and Tacomas, but the question is why are these small trucks so popular? Recently Justin (see below) wrote us this email with a small list of questions. The one that stands out to me is why are so many people deciding that they now need a new mid size truck?

Hi guys ,

Just a question (s)…..  I saw the recent sales of pickups .  What amazed me is small truck category and ram!

1. Why are people buying these midsize trucks when they can get a full size for almost the same price ? …. they can get more room , more towing / hauling etc

2. Why is ram continuing to have gains ?    They are the oldest platform /style ….   they have the least towing and yet they are having awesome sales with an old truck.   What will happen when they have a new style lol

3. Is this a growing trend that more and more people just like to drive a truck because they are so versatile and not as concerned about max towing and hauling etc ?

Just some questions swirling in my mind.     Have a great day guys.    Keep up the good work.   I own  Chevy ford and ram trucks btw …

The answer maybe very simple. Just like the Crossover craze, mid size trucks are just the right size with the must have go anywhere 4WD system and rugged looks combined with great utility for the skier, surfer, or cowboy in all of us. In other words, they are the Goldilocks truck of the moment in so much that they are just right for many new truck buyers. Or…is could be that they actually fit in most people’s garage.

That’s my take. What do you think? Please help out Justin and answer his thoughtful questions in the comments below and check out this recent TFL mid size truck mashup review:
