Ask TFLTruck: Predict the Horsepower and Torque for the 2018 Ram HD?

We recently received the following question from Levi White:

How much torque do you think 2018 /2019 Ram trucks will have?

We do real-world testing, such as: Ike Gauntlet towing, the 100-mile highway efficiency, and off-road performance in order to find out how manufacturer’s advertising claims and specification sheets translate to everyday use. Some results are expected, but others are very surprising.

The heavy duty pickup truck horsepower and torque wars are in full swing. Truck manufacturers love making “best in class” claims. As such, how will Ram Trucks react to the escalating power numbers from Ford and GM?

The 2016 Ram HD was the king of torque with its high output Cummins 6.7L I6 turbo-diesel with 900 lb-ft of torque (385 horsepower). The fully redesigned 2017 Ford Super Duty arrived on the scene with class leading 440 horsepower and 925 lb-ft of torque from the 6.7L Power Stroke V8. This truck is on sale now. Next, it was GM’s turn to answer, and they did with a thoroughly upgraded 6.6L Duramax V8 that is rated at a class leading 445 horsepower, and second-place 910 lb-ft of torque.

Ram has not announced the power ratings for the next iteration of the Cummins motor, but we know they are testing truck in the Rocky Mountains.

I do not have a crystal ball, but here is my prediction. The 6.7L Cummins has traditionally focused on big torque. I think this will continue. I will go out on a limb and say – the next Ram HD will produce around 415 horsepower and 950 lb-ft of torque. I think Ram will be looking to be the king of torque once again.

What do you think? What are your predictions for the power output of the upcoming Ram HD?

Here are Nathan and Andre getting a look at the 2018 Ram HD 3500 and 4500 test trucks.
