The 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor gets ever closer to production with the debut of the SuperCrew version at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show. We have already seen crew cab prototypes of the upcoming second generation Raptor pickup truck in the wild (see the prototype images below).

Here we have the 2017 Raptor SuperCrew in its official garb. This is basically what you can expect from the production Raptor truck. However, Ford remains tight-lipped about many specifications.

If you’ve watched our coverage of the Raptor prototype from a year ago (see video below), you already know a lot of the details. The second generation off-roader comes with a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6. Official output numbers are not being announced at this time, but the engine will produce over 411 horsepower and 434 lb-ft of torque. The high-output EcoBoost is mated to a new 10-speed automatic transmission.

The SuperCrew Raptor rides on a 145-inch wheelbase (this is 12 inches longer than that of the SuperCab). This configuration is also available on the regular Ford F-150. However, the Raptor rides on a track which is 6-inches wider than the standard truck, hence the bulging fenders that attempt to cover the 3-inch diameter FOX Racing off-road shocks and BFGoodrich All-Terrain KO2 tires. The upgraded shocks and suspension offer 11.2 inches of travel at the front and 12 inches at the rear.

The Raptor will showcase Ford’s next generation of off-road driving mode technology, referred to as the Terrain Management System. It works in conjunction with an updated transfer case that offers attributes of both a clutch-driven (on-demand all-wheel-drive) and mechanical-locking four-wheel drive system to send power to the wheels in low traction conditions. No fewer than six preset modes can be selected to power through various terrain and surface conditions:

  • Normal mode: for everyday driving
  • Street mode: for higher-performance, on-road driving
  • Weather mode: for rain, snow or ice
  • Mud and sand mode: for muddy and sandy trails and terrain
  • Baja mode: for high-speed desert running
  • Rock mode: for low-speed rock crawling

The Raptor will go on sale at the end of the calendar year 2016. Check out the Everything You Ever Wanted to Know video of the 2017 Raptor from its auto show debut below.
