Should the FIAT Strada-based Ram 700 Pickup Truck come to the USA?

When it was revealed that FCA/Ram was selling a car-based pickup (based on the FIAT Strada) in Mexico, a slew of curious and interested consumers looked up the Ram 700.

Only one engine choice is available for the Ram 700; it’s a 1.6-liter four-cylinder making a scant 115 horsepower and 119 lbs-feet of torque. The power is sent to the front wheels via a 5-speed manual transmission, an all-wheel drive (AWD) version is said to be available soon.

The Ram 700 has two cab styles available, a standard cab and a Club Cab. The regular cab can hold 1,554 lbs and 1,433 lbs with the Club Cab model. Both configurations seem to share the same 107-inch wheelbase with the Ram 700 Club Cab’s bed being slightly shorter. image

It looks like local pricing hovers between $13,900 to $18,900.

The big question here is: will this truck, or a version of it, sell in the United States?

The FIAT Strada is pretty popular in South America and has proven to be pretty rugged. Given its size, capacity (I was told that it can tow more than 2,000 lbs) and economy, it represents a striking idea for folks who simply don’t need the high capacity of a full sized truck.

With that being said, my “source” said that, in its current form, there are no plans to bring the Ram 700 to the USA; however, there is a chance that something like it could hot our market in the next few years.

There’s a lot of buzz about the new batch of mid-sized pickup trucks coming to the United States. Still, not one automaker is offering anything small. If consumer interest proves to be loud enough, perhaps we’ll hear more about the Ram 700 in the near future.

Speaking of smallish trucks…  Check out this video of the 2015 Chevy Colorado.
