Mercedes-Benz will officially unveil the 2019 Mercedes G Wagon (simply referred to as “G”) in less than two weeks at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show (aka. NAIAS). We now learn more details about what the next Mercedes off-roader will look like. We also get a lot more specifications than before.

All images here are provided by Mercedes-Benz.

Get ready for the Schöckl! What is the Schöckl? It’s a mountain near Graz, Austria – near where the G Wagon is produced. Mercedes G team use these mountain trails to test the off-road abilities of their vehicles, and the new 2019 G is no exception. In fact, Mercedes says that the 2019 prototypes have logged over 1,242 miles on this difficult mountain trail.

The all-new G is also getting larger with more interior space and modern luxurious style. Take a look at more 2019 G Wagon interior images and details.

Although the dimensions of the new G Wagon grow, the overall shape and design remain classic and true to its military vehicle heritage. High-mounted front running lights are still there.

The new G-class still has a frame and a solid rear axle, but up front is a new independent double-wishbone suspension that attached directly to the frame. Mercedes says the suspension design improves ground clearance and ride quality on and off the pavement.

The new luxury off-roader still has three locking differentials (front, middle, and rear) with a low-gearing transfer case. There is a new G-mode that modifies the adjustable damping, steering, and transmission setting for improved off-road driving experience, according to Mercedes.

The new G is said to have about 9.5 inches of ground clearance, which is more than on the previous G550 model. It will be able to ford around 27.5 inches of water. The SUV has 31 deg approach, 30 deg departure, and 26 deg breakover angles. These images of the prototype on the Schöckl show significant wheel articulation in the rear, but not as much with the front independent suspension.

The new truck is equipped with the 9-speed automatic transmission and a 2.93 low-range gear ratio for proper low-speed crawling. It will come with a 360-degree camera system and optional 18-inch all-terrain tires.

How will the new G do off-road? We won’t know for sure until we take on our Schöckl – the Cliffhanger 2.0 Rocky Mountain trail.
