How much power does the “baby” Duramax diesel put down to the ground in the 2018 Chevy ZR2? That’s what we are here to find out. Thank you to Dave from bringing his personal truck to Harvey’s shop (The Boost Creep LTD) to get real-world dyno numbers.

We know that the 2.8L Duramax I4 in the Chevy Colorado is rated at 186 horsepower @ 3,400 rpm and 369 lb-ft of torque @ 2,000 rpm at the crank. Actually, the little Duramax had an initial rating of 181 horsepower that was recently updated by GM to 186 hp.

Dave put 2,000 very careful break-in miles on his ZR2. It was a cold October evening in Colorado (between 33 – 37 F). Conditions were good for a few dyno runs. Harvey uses a flat 15% sea level correction factor due to our elevation and environment factors. The results were very surprising. The ZR2 put down an approximate average of 176 hp and 361 lb-ft of torque to the Goodyear Duratrac off-road tires after three runs.

Generally, one would expect drivetrain loses, but these dyno runs showed wheel power that is very close to the factory “crank” power ratings.

Maximum torque did come in between 2,000 – 2,500 rpm, and maximum power was achieved before 3,000 rpm.
