Would You Buy a Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Toyota Tundra Pickup? (Poll)

2018 Toyota Tundra TRD Sport

Images of a very peculiar hydrogen fuel cell electric Toyota Tundra prototype recently surfaced at a 2017 Asilomar Biennial Conference on Transportation and Energy. You can see the images of the prototype here. The prototype does not appear to be officially sanctioned by Toyota, although it uses a late model Tundra as the basis.

This again raises an interesting question. Will Toyota produce a hydrogen fuel cell pickup truck in the coming years? Toyota has the experience in this field withe the Toyota Mirai. Why not use the technology and scale it up to the Tundra pickup?

A hydrogen fuel cell electric system is fueled by hydrogen. At the most simplified level, the system combines the hydrogen with the oxygen from the atmosphere. The result is electricity for propulsion, and water is the byproduct.

There are many design and engineering challenges associated with this. Toyota can surely overcome all of them, but there is still the challenge of a sparse hydrogen re-fueling network. Currently, consumers can find hydrogen refuel stations in large urban areas of California and New York.

If Toyota can get this done, it would make for a torque-rich electric pickup truck that can theoretically haul and tow heavy loads.

If given an option to purchase a hydrogen fuel cell electric Toyota Tundra, would you do it? Please use the poll and the comments section below to let us know.
