Volkswagen California XXL Concept Shows Possibilities For a Future Camper Van

If you’re a Volkswagen Van fan, then you are in luck! There is a lot of talk about vans from Volkswagen, not only the upcoming I.D. Buzz Microbus, but vehicles like this Volkswagen California XXL Concept. This concept is based on the second-generation Crafter van which is a medium wheelbase VW commercial van. This larger platform allows Volkswagen to place a special “hi-roof” cap on top of the van, stretch is a little, give it an all-wheel-drive system, and explorer the future of van camping.

The Volkswagen California XXL Concept has space for a small family who want many of the perks of owning a Class-C motorhome, without the bulk and other compromises. The concept has room for a small bunk above the cockpit, a bath which extends when needed, a kitchen which can be utilized inside and out and a large table in the rear which transforms into a cozy bed for two.

Volkswagen has yet to release performance numbers or mechanical specifications. It has a 2.0-liter TDI engine, but we don’t know the power output. We know that the the XXL Concept is 2.9-m tall and a bit longer than a regular medium wheelbase Crafter van, but little else.

According to VW, the Volkswagen California XXL Concept will make a debut at this year’s Düsseldorf Caravan Salon later this month. We will follow this concept and wonder if Volkswagen will consider doing something similar with their future I.D. Buzz Microbus.

Since this XXL Concept is not for sale (at least yet), here is a another take on an off-road RV.
