The 3.0L turbo-diesel V6 in this all-new Land Rover Discovery HSE is quiet and smooth. It’s also very efficient. The Discovery tD6 is rated at 26 MPG on the highway by the EPA. That’s very good for a three-row 4WD SUV. This 3.0L diesel was originally developed by a joint effort with the Ford Motor Company. Coincidentally, a V6 that is very similar to this (perhaps with a slightly different power rating) will be used in the upcoming Ford F-150 diesel. How efficient is it on our 100-mile highway mpg loop with a 7,000 lbs trailer in tow? Let’s find out!

This is as close as we can currently get to the turbo-diesel that will be powering the F-150. We understand that the Land Rover is using an 8-speed automatic transmission. Ford is planning to use their new 10-speed automatic they co-developed with General Motors. Ford will most likely use a different tune on the engine and a different rear axle ratio. The Ford also has a different curb weight and aerodynamic profile.

Nonetheless, we got to tow with the Discovery. It has a maximum towing rating of nearly 7,716 lbs (or 3,500 kg). The Land Rover has a leveling air suspension and a provision for automated trailer backup assistance (Advanced Tow Assist).

Will the Land Rover Discovery be the most efficient tow vehicle we have ever tested? Check out the video for all of the details.
