2017 Nissan Titan vs. Titan XD: Pros and Cons

Which Nissan Titan is best for you? We get many questions about the latest 2017 Nissan Titans on a weekly basis. Here is our most recent take on the subject. The examples you see here are: 2017 Nissan Titan XD crew cab PRO-4X Diesel and a 2017 Nissan Titan crew cab PRO-4X gasoline V8.

Nissan Titan XD

These trucks may look the same, but there are many important differences that set them apart. First, the XD and the half-ton Titans are built on distinct frames. The XD has a heavier and stronger frame for carrying heftier loads and towing larger weights. The Titan XD is also the only truck in the Nissan arsenal that is available with the 5.0L Cummins turbo-diesel. The engine is rated at a 310 hp and 555 lb-ft of torque and backed up by a 6-speed Aisin automatic transmission.

The XD crew cab diesel is rated at approximately 2,030 lbs of payload and 12,030 lbs of maximum towing. This is approximately 400 lbs more payload and 2,700 lbs more towing capability than a Titan “half-ton”.

We have shown the Titan XD diesel to get better fuel economy than it’s 5.6L gasoline V8 counterpart, especially under load. However, this does come at a price. The Cummins engine/ Aisin transmission add $5,000 to the price of an XD. Also, the Titan XD is approximately $2,000 more expensive than a corresponding Titan light duty.

If you are looking for a quick truck with great V8 sound, the Titan half-ton with the 5.6L gas V8 is it. The engine is rated at 390 hp and 394 lb-ft of torque and backed up by a 7-speed automatic transmission. If you look at a gas-powered crew cab 4×4 XD versus a gas Titan crew cab 4×4, the XD truck is nearly 900 lbs heavier. You cannot deny the extra heft. The lighter Titan is much quicker at 0-60 MPH acceleration. We tested it at under 8.0 seconds at about a mile above sea level.

The 2017 Titan starts at a $29,580. The 2017 Titan XD begins at $31,590.

Nissan did say that a new V6 is coming to the Titan lineup, but there have been no recent mention on the timing for this.
