TFLtruck’s Top 10 Bizarre and Unusual Trucks: From Midsize Dually to a Retractable Hardtop [Video]

Sometimes we simply have fun with our TFLtoday live broadcasts. This is TFLtruck’s Top 10 Bizarre and Unusual trucks. We picked some of the most unusual trucks sold in North America over the last four to five decades.

We shoot live videos on our TFLnow Youtube channel on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 10 a.m. MST. The best part is: we get to talk and interact with viewers directly. Even after the video ends, we are able to read the comments once the live video becomes a standard video on our channel.

Here are the wacky trucks we like the most.

10. Toyota Dually Sunraider

Toyota outsourced the final production of this little towing machine. It features a beefed-up elongated frame and a modified rear axle with dually rear wheels.

9. International MXT

How about a medium-duty semi truck for the masses? The name originated from “Military Extreme Truck”. At an average price of $80,000, the MXT was not for the entire masses. Still, the truck had a turbo-diesel V8 and a 5-speed Allison automatic transmission. It could tow and haul a great amount of weight, and it had road presence like very few out there.

8. Mazda Rotary Pickup

What if you put a high-revving rotary engine into a small and light-weight pickup truck? You would get the Mazda Rotary pickup. This little truck could not haul or tow a lot, but it was relatively quick for its day and it could launch glider planes, according to this advertisement.

7. Volkswagen (Caddy) Rabbit Pickup

How good was the front-wheel-drive VW Rabbit Pickup? You still see diesel versions of this mini truck driving around, nearly fourty years after it made its debut.

6. GMC Envoy XUV

What if you took an SUV, gave it a sliding rear roof section, a folding seat, and a dual-action rear tail gate? You end up with a “transformer” SUV that can convert into a truck. GM called it the Envoy XUV.

5. Dodge Dakota Convertible

A convertible Dodge Dakota was a very interesting concept, and this truck is so rare now, it’s quickly going the collectibility scale.

4. Lincoln Blackwood

How about this Lincoln pickup truck with many luxury features and a short carpeted bed? It was expensive and not greatly useful, but it actually looked pretty good.

3. Jeep FC-170 & FC-150

Jeep FC

You have to admit that the Forward Control (FC) Jeep pickups were some of the coolest and unique little pickup trucks. The odd “cab-over” driving position was combined with Jeep’s off-road toughness.

2. Subaru Brat and Subaru Baja

Turning cars into pickup trucks was its own genre, but the Brat and the Baja stand out to us as some of the most bizarre.

1. Chevrolet SSR

A retro-styled convertible hardtop pickup truck with a very small bed and a big V8 engine is one of the most unusual trucks we can think of.

… and our bonuses, the Chevrolet El Camino and Ford Ranchero

Now comes the fun part. We want to see what vehicles you would add or subtract. Keep in mind: these choices are either produced through the automaker or they were produced by a sub-contractor to the manufacturer. It’s not a hack-job or a one-off toy, we’re talking about products that were sold in the United States.
