ETL Overland – military chassis 4×4 RV

When I heard that a recently completed ETL Overland 4×4 RV was in town, I jumped at the chance to see it. I met Andrew, CEO of ETL Overland, and went off for a quick drive in the Rocky Mountains. The concept it fairly simple. This four wheel drive RV allows for all-weather and all-terrain adventure driving for up to six people (four adults and two kids).

This particular RV is based on a Stewart & Stevenson (LMTV) surplus military chassis. LMTV stands for Light Medium Tactical Vehicle. It’s powered by a Caterpillar C7 diesel engine that is mated to a 7-speed Allison automatic transmission. The C7 engine is available in several configurations and power levels. This one is rated at approximately 275 hp and 816 lb-ft of torque. Once you get used to the size of this beast, it’s relatively easy to drive. It is equipped with air actuated brakes, which can be touchy as slow speeds and need some getting used to as well.

It’s all good, but you have to keep in mind that this military is not meant for high-speed highway cruising. It’s happiest at 55 mph on the highway, and it will go a maximum of around 60 mph if you push it. ETL Overland also builds on top of commercial truck chassis from International, in case you plan on doing a lot of highway driving. This LMTV is happiest lumbering off the pavement.

It has 60 gallons of diesel fuel and enough fresh/grey/black water capacity to go off-the-grid for about a week and 250-300 miles.
