How far can one push a heavy duty pickup truck? Who will be the first manufacturer to reach 1,000 lb-ft of torque? Is there such a thing as too much torque? Ram Trucks is hard at work on the next iteration of their Cummins-powered heavy duty trucks.

The 2017 Ford Super Duty is on sale now, and it’s available with a 6.7L Power Stroke V8 with 440 horsepower and 925 lb-ft of torque. GM has unveiled the 2017 Chevy Silverado HD and the GMC Sierra HD with the next generation of the 6.6L Duramax V8 diesel with 445 horsepower and 910 lb-ft of torque. The current 6.7L high output Cummins I6 in the Ram HD is rated at 385 horsepower and 900 lb-ft. How much more power can Cummins and Ram squeeze out of the straight six? Guys in the aftermarket get monster numbers out of kinds of diesel engines, but manufacturers have to contend with tough durability, warranty, and emissions requirements.
