Toyota Tacoma Is Losing Significant Market Share in a Growing Midsize Truck Segment

The midsize pickup truck segment crossed over 292,000 units through the first eight months of 2016. If the sales continue in this fashion for the remainder of the year, then the total 2016 sales will be nearly 440,000 midsizers. The last two years saw a big resurgence of the midsize pickup truck with an introduction of the new Chevy Colorado, GMC Canyon, and Toyota Tacoma. The second generation Honda Ridgeline is the latest addition.

Toyota Tacoma is still leading the segment with a commanding 43% of market share. On the surface, this is a great position to be in. However, Toyota’s concern has to do with the fact that the Tacoma had approximately 61% of the segment 20 months ago. The Tacoma lost 18% of market share in less than two years.

Here are the August 2016 sales report and the December 2014 sales reports for comparison.
