Do you know or care where your pickup truck is made? Many people do. In the case of the Toyota Tundra, all of them are produced at the Toyota Truck plan in San Antonio, Texas. This plant also produces more than half of the Toyota Tacomas for the North American market (the rest of the Tacoma trucks are made in Baja, Mexico). Why build trucks in Texas? Texas is the heart of America’s truck country. Toyota sells approximately 30% of all of its pickups in Texas. Why not make the trucks where they are the most popular?

Toyota broke ground on the San Antonio truck plant in 2003. The plant was designed to produce around 200,000 pickup trucks, but recent increased demand required Toyota to request plant workers to work overtime (as part of the Alternating Work Schedule). The plant produced over 233,000 Tundras and Tacomas in 2015.

The big challenge for this manufacturing facility is the fact that they produce over 16 variations of the Tacoma and over 27 variations of the Tundra on the same factory line. These variations include different wheelbases, cab and bed sizes, and trim levels.
