The midsize pickup truck segment saw a resurgence in 2015 with the introduction of the third generation of the Toyota Tacoma and strong sales of the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon. (Check the sales figures.)

While the Tacoma is still dominating the segment, the entries from GM and Nissan continue to rack up the numbers. The all-new second generation 2017 Honda Ridgeline will go on sale in the spring of 2016. Can it regain the success the company saw when the original Ridgeline showed up for the 2006 model year? Will it take away sales from the segment competitors or will it bring in customers from other segments?

The new Ridgeline will share the 3.5-liter V6 with the redesigned 2016 Honda Pilot. Honda did not announce exact specifications or transmission options (although the 6-speed automatic will be available), but the company said that it’s targeting leading acceleration and fuel economy in the midsize truck segment.

The latest midsize truck brings exclusive innovations. The double-hinged tailgate returns in the new truck as does the updated under-bed lockable 8.5 cu-ft trunk. The new addition is the in-bed stereo system. It basically turns the entire inner bed into a speaker. Also, the bed is enlarged to 5-feet in width by 5.4 feet in length. Honda estimated approximately 1,600 lbs of maximum payload capability. The towing rating was not yet released.

What do you think? Can the all-new 2017 Honda Ridgeline find success and challenge Chevrolet and Toyota in midsize truck sales?
