TFLtruck Talk: 2017 Ford Super Duty

We had a little bit of time to digest the information that Ford presented about the 2017 Ford Super Duty. Andre meets up with Kent Sundling of MrTruck.com to discuss and share first impressions and critiques.

The 2017 truck using aluminum for the cab and the bed. It is taller than the previous version, it has different design for the dually wheel fenders, and it’s loaded with all the latest technology.

Ford is doing small tweaks to the engines and transmissions for the new truck. The truck will be offered with the 6.2L V8, the 6.8L V10 for the F450 and F550 chassis cab configurations, and the 6.7L V8 Power Stroke turbo-diesel. The 6.2L V8 will be E85 and CNG capable, but Ford did not release any power numbers on any of the updated engines.

There is a choice of two 6-speed automatic transmissions in the 2017 Super Duty. There is a lighter 6-speed for the 6.2L V8 gasoline motor. It saves on weight and improves efficiency (although Ford did not say how much). The V10 and the 6.7L Power Stroke remain with the updated heavy-duty 6-speed automatic. No EcoBoost or 10-speed transmission here, although Craig Schmatz, Ford Super Duty chief engineer, left the door open for this in the future (watch the video).
