How quick is the updated 2015 Ford Expedition EL at 0-60 MPH? How does adding extra weight affect the acceleration performance? These are the questions TFLtruck wanted to answer with this test.

The “EL” means that it’s the long wheel-base version of the Expedition. Yes, it has one of the most spacious passenger and cargo areas. It can carry up to eight adults in comfort. However, the extra weight increases the curb weight to nearly 6,100 pounds. It’s not as heavy as an HD pickup truck, but it’s getting into the neighborhood.

Motivation comes from the 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engine that is also found in the Ford F-150. This twin-turbocharged engine makes 365 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque. This is the big update for the 2015 Expedition. The old V8 is no more.

All of our 0-60 MPH testing is performed at a mile above sea level, and this robs engines of power due to less air density. Naturally aspirated engines lose around 17% of power at this altitude. However, the dual turbos of the 3.5L partially compensate for the loss. They also make the accelerations a bit more consistent. The track surface was a little damp during this test, so we were not able to get the best time. This test is meant to show how additional weight affects acceleration.
