GM says it has NO plans to build the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 – At This Time

A General Motors representative stated that GM will not be building the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 “at this time.” This statement counters our report yesterday that GM could have a Canadian Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 in as little as three to six months. You can see that story (here).

Fortunately, the “mini” (2.8-liter) Duramax diesel (which makes 180 horsepower and a massive 365 lbs-feet of torque) will come out near the end of next year as an engine for 2016 models.

This is a pity, but it’s not unexpected. The idea of the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 is exceptional, but the price markup for all of the additions, modifications and upgrades of the concept truck in its current form would be painfully expensive. Keep in mind: GM simply said they are not building it at this time. It’s entirely possible that, with the outpouring of enthusiasm for the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 concept, a softened version of the concept may be in the works.

Aftermarket companies are working on upgrades for the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado and 2015 GMC Canyon right now. Next year’s SEMA show will see lots of goodies for the mid-sized GM trucks to become as badass (if not – more so) as the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Concept.

Still, it would have been pretty awesome.

We’ll keep pestering General Motors about the future of the ZR2 – and so should you.

Here’s the video debut of the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Concept.
