Ford Super Duty: Celebrating 5-Millionth truck [State Fair of Texas]

Ford made an announcement related to the Ford Super Duty at the 2014 State Fair of Texas. The company is planning to celebrate the 5-millionth truck. That is a big production milestone and an achievement worth celebrating, but it’s not an announcement we anticipated. (See our guess.)

The “Super Duty” nameplate began production at Ford’s Kentucky Truck Plant 15 years ago. Back then, the 1999 Super Duty could be ordered with a 6.8L Triton V10 gasoline motor or the 7.3L diesel V8, along with the 5.4L V8 option. The V10 was rated at 275 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque. The 7.3L diesel came in with 235 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque.

The power trains have come a long way, as the 2015 Super duty is available with a 6.2L V8 (385 hp and 405 lb-ft), and the in-house built 6.7L Power Stroke V8 turbo-diesel (440 hp and 860 lb-ft). The power levels are up by a huge margin, but efficiencies have improved over 1999 models.

Ford claims that the Super Duty holds 44% market share among for the segment.
