If it cannot ship, Redesign the train – 2015 Ford Transit

We all know that “if it fits, it ships” right? Perhaps that only applies to the United States Postal Service but that is the exact problem Ford encountered when trying to deliver their new high roof Transit Vans to dealers around the country. The new Transit Van with the tallest available roof measures in at 110.1 inches tall, making it incredibly versatile and roomy on the inside but the high-roof and medium Vans simply will not fit on traditional 2 story railcars used to transport new vehicles.

Ford Designs Innovative Railcar to Ship All-New Transit Van

After several different ideas on how to effectively move their Transit Vans, Ford found the solution back in 2010 by working with rail car manufactures to design and develop a rail car that can perfectly transport and accommodate the ultra-tall vans for the 2015 model year. This type of innovation from Ford is said to reduce the cost of shipment and the overall time it takes the Vans to arrive at the dealers. The railcars were designed so that the lower of the two decks could carry up to seven high-roof and medium Transit Vans while simultaneously carrying some of Fords smallest vehicles like the Fiesta or Fusion on the upper deck. Ford also says the new railcar project is very supportive of the Blue Print for Sustainability by decreasing environmental impact and utilizing resources in a responsible manner.
