First Drive Review: 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel Laramie goes 0-60 MPH

2014 ram 1500 ecodiesel 0-60 mph review

Truck fans in United States have been waiting a long time for this moment.  A light-duty 1500 pickup truck with a diesel motor.  Enter the 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel.  It was only several years ago when automotive journalists were joking about a light-duty diesel on April fool’s day.  We need to kid no more.  It’s really happening.

The Fast Lane Truck team got a chance to do a first drive review of the 2014 EcoDiesel Laramie CrewCab 4×4.  At its heart beats a 3.0-liter V6 turbo diesel motor with 240 hp and 420 lb-ft.  This truck that can still do work – 9,200 lbs of maximum towing and same payload capacity as the non-diesel brethren.  The diesel engine adds about $2,800 to similarly equipped HEMI V8 Ram.  The Laramie edition truck you see in this video stickers at a steep $55,205.  This truck is a luxurious machine that still does not go over the top.

However, you don’t have to get a Laramie CrewCab to get the EcoDiesel.  You can add the EcoDiesel to your option list for almost all 2014 Ram configurations and trim.  There are just a few exceptions.  The diesel is not available in the regular cab with the shorter 6.4 foot bed or the Express and Sport trims.  However, a regular cab with the eight foot box or any other Quad and Crew cab trims (4×2 or 4×4) are fair game.  The EcoDiesel is backed up by the same 8-speed TorqueFlight transmission as you can find in the other Ram 1500s.  Official MPG numbers are not available as of this writing, but the Ram chief engineer told us that 700 miles per fill-up is possible.

Watch this insider TFLtruck video to find out how the 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel sounds inside and out.  You can also watch how fast it goes 0-60 MPH in typical TFL style.  By the way, the EcoDiesel has the dual exhaust system that you can find on the HEMI.  Check it out!
